Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory and relapsing cutaneous disease characterized by pruritus, cutaneous inflammation, and transepidermal water loss (Krakowski 2008).  The incidence of AD in industrialized nations has increased by 2- to 3-fold over a 30-year span, and it is estimated to affect between 15% and 30% of children in industrialized nations (Bieber 2010).  Although most children with AD will “outgrow” the disease, AD has additionally been reported to affect up to 10% of adults, and recent research suggests that AD is under-recognized in this group (Bieber 2010; Silver

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited red blood cell disorder that affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States. SCD is characterized by extremely painful, acute pain episodes known as vaso-occlusive crises (VOC). VOC are the primary presenting morbidity of SCD and cause of hospitalization in 95% of cases. Recurrent VOC episodes have a significant, negative impact on health related quality of life and have a greater impact than cumulative organ damage.

Treatments targeting calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) effectively treat migraine and have changed our approach to the disorder. This course will review how these medications work and provide updates on their safety and effectiveness. We will particularly focus on differences between monoclonal antibodies and small molecule antagonists against CGRP, acute and preventive treatment, and individualizing therapy for each patient. This activity is supported by an educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline

There are gaps in dermatologic care today concerning patients with skin of color (SOC) that need to be addressed through education and putting new knowledge into practice. Patients with SOC can be disproportionately affected by dermatologic conditions such as melasma, acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation. Even children with SOC can be more susceptible or have a greater disease burden, especially with conditions such as acne, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, keloids, pityriasis alba, and traction alopecia.
